Information for new Companions
The Guild of Cambridge Benefactors was established in 1998 to celebrate and recognise the extraordinary generosity of Cambridge’s most visionary donors.
It was the first time in the modern era that Collegiate Cambridge came together in a unified way to honour its most significant benefactors. Today, the Guild continues to build on centuries of philanthropic tradition at Cambridge, and to honour those who help shape Cambridge’s future.
Private rehearsal
To help you feel comfortable and confident on the day, we hold a private pre-ceremony rehearsal for all new Companions.
During the rehearsal you will:
- Walk through the procession order and entry into the Senate-house
- Practice where to stand and when to step forward during your induction
- Have your official portrait photographs taken
- Receive guidance from event staff, who will be on hand throughout to support you.
Time: 4.30pm
Location: Senate-House
Your induction and the ceremony
Your formal induction as a Guild Companion will take place during the ceremony, which will be presided over by the University’s new Chancellor, Lord Smith.
The ceremony begins with a procession of all Guild Companions, wearing the burgundy Guild gown, which will be provided to you beforehand.
During the ceremony, you will be invited forward to receive your scroll from the Chancellor, marking your official admission into the Guild.
What else happens on the day
All Companions are invited to join the full Guild programme, including a choice of afternoon activities, the main reception, ceremony, and celebratory dinner.
