Snapshots of alumni engagement

Chancellor election

This year saw one of the most significant mobilisations of Cambridge alumni ever, for the election of the new Chancellor — a historic moment in the life of the University. The campaign had complex data requirements and involved the creation of multiple new cohorts to communicate with. We reached 240k potential voters and reconnected with 98k alumni previously out of touch. For the first time, the Cambridge community from all corners of the globe were able to have their say via online voting, with more than 23,000 alumni and staff participating. In addition, almost 2,000 chose to vote in person at the University's Senate House.

Alumni engagement has increased through expanded event and volunteering programmes

Alumni globally connected with Cambridge through events this year

International alumni events reached more than 400 people across key regions

The Vice-Chancellor made first time visits to strategic markets and met with 1,100 alumni

Sold-out gatherings in Hong Kong, Singapore and Sydney, and a capacity crowd at the Boat Race event demonstrated the continued desire of alumni to engage with both academic research and insight and flagship Cambridge fixtures.

Careers events

To better serve our newest alumni cohorts, the alumni engagement team worked with the Careers Service to establish a programme of events and activities to support students as they transition from their courses to leaving the University. This included a suite of alumni videos with advice for students embarking on their careers, such as this one on Facebook.

Alumni groups

Understanding our alumni groups around the world and looking at how those groups could better support University priorities, such as admissions and outreach, continues to be an area of focus.

This year, alumni volunteers supported international admissions with outreach events in Chile, Colombia, Malaysia, Thailand, Mexico, mainland China (Guangdong and Shanghai), Singapore, Hong Kong, Luxembourg and Belgium.

A new post was created dedicated to maximising alumni engagement around the upcoming 50th anniversary of the School of Clinical Medicine.
