Ella Colbourn is aiming to bounce back stronger after suffering an injury-impacted campaign.

College Jesus Entry year 2023 Course Geography Sport Athletics (800m)

The Jesus College student was able to travel with Cambridge University as part of the joint team with Oxford to face Yale and Harvard, and Penn and Cornell in the Transatlantic Series, helping the Achilles team to victory.

Ella also competed for the Blues in the Varsity Cross Country and in their win in the Varsity Athletics.

But she struggled with piriformis syndrome, and missed seven weeks of training in the spring, and it returned in June to bring an early end to the track season.

“Due to struggling with injury this year, the UCAPP programme has been absolutely vital in helping me to get healthy again, and I am very grateful to have been part of the programme again,” said Ella.

“Having access to the UCAPP physio has meant I am now able to run without pain, but more importantly, it has allowed me to understand the cause of my injury and how I can prevent it from happening again in the future through rehab and strengthening exercises. Without the support of UCAPP, I would not have been able to access the quality and volume of physio support I needed to get me back to training.

“Similarly, the S+C coaching I received was tailored throughout the year to suit my needs and allow me to compete at my best; particularly important throughout the period of injury, as Zee ensured that the programme was not hindering my recovery and recommended beneficial strengthening exercises.

“Although the season hasn’t gone how I had hoped, I am now back to training and I am targeting the winter season – a recovery that would not have been possible without UCAPP support.”

Future goals and targets:

  • Break personal best of 2min 5sec.
  • Win a medal at the BUCS outdoor championships.
  • Win the 800m at the Varsity Match.
